More drama has unfolded in the aftermath following the murder of Dancehall star, Wayne ‘Captain Barkey’ Hamilton as his alleged killer is now dead.
Joseph Kernizan, the man accused of killing Hamilton and his female companion, Tracy Bennett outside a New York motel on Saturday committed suicide on Tuesday inside a Florida-based apartment, according to New York law enforcement officials. According to several New York based publication, the 42-year-old Kernizan shot himself in the head as police tried to enter the apartment in an effort to arrest him.
New York Police Department (NYPD) officials tracked down Kernizan with the help of federal marshals and the Miami police, according to law enforcement officials, as they found him at a two-story, four-family house in Miami where the alleged killer had stayed since the killing.
After police ordered residents of the apartment to evacuate, Kernizan tried to escape, but after seeing police inside, he retreated and shot himself before a Bronx Felony Squad discovered and identified the body.
Kernizan hailed as Tracy Bennett’s ex-boyfriend as the former couple had two children. However, Bennett had reportedly been dating Captain Barkey for the last five years, despite the fact that the veteran deejay had a wife.
Captain Barkey reportedly received death threats from Kernizan prior to his murder and had been warned by long-time friend and musical partner, Wickerman to disassociate himself from Bennett considering the possible risks and ramifications.
Captain Barkey was renowned within the Jamaican music community for singles like Go Go Wine and Bun Fi Bun. His body will reportedly be flown to Jamaica in a few weeks and will be buried in Portmore, St. Catherine.
